Community Learning

Welcome to Subsidised Science Lessons for Children in Disadvantaged Communities

At Oxford Science Learning Centre, we are excited to introduce a new initiative aimed at providing subsidised science lessons to groups of children in disadvantaged communities across the UK, Africa and the Caribbean. Our goal is to make high-quality science education accessible to all, removing barriers to learning. We know that studying science call be challenging for learners who do not have access to high quality teaching or additional resources. At Oxford Science Learning Centre we offer expert tuition, academic coaches and mentors to support learners making the journey from GCSE’s to top careers in Science fields such as Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering and Medicine.

What Makes Our Approach Special?

Our teaching is based on two fundamental principles: Mastery of the Basics and developing meaningful knowledge of key concepts within scientific disciplines. We believe that focusing on these core elements gives students the foundation and confidence to excel in science.
Science is a critical subject that opens doors to a range of future career opportunities and fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, many children in disadvantaged communities lack the resources to explore science properly. This new initiative is designed to fill that gap, providing children with the educational tools they need to succeed.

Mastery of the Basics

We ensure that students fully understand the fundamental principles of science before moving on to more complex topics. This approach helps them:

  • Grasp essential scientific concepts, such as energy, matter, and forces.
  • Build confidence through repeated practice, ensuring they can revisit topics until they feel comfortable.
  • Develop problem-solving skills essential for further learning.

Interactive Learning

We make science fun and engaging by using hands-on experiments and real-world examples. Students are encouraged to:

  • Engage with interactive activities and home-based experiments using simple, everyday materials.
  • Watch video demonstrations to help visualize scientific principles.
  • Ask questions, test hypotheses, and think like scientists in an environment that fosters curiosity.

A New Initiative for Long-Term Impact

This initiative aims to make a lasting impact by reaching children who may not have access to quality science education. As part of this program, we offer:

  • Tailored lessons for different age groups, from primary to secondary school students.
  • Support for students with additional learning needs, ensuring that all learners can engage and thrive.
  • Online support and homework help through our team of volunteer educators.
By mastering basic concepts and exploring science through active learning, we want to spark curiosity and foster a love for science in students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Why It Matters

We believe in the democratisation of science. We believe that scientific discovery happens when science is open to the broadest section of society.  When students from  every background, every walk of life have access to high quality science tuition.

We know scientific exploration is key to solving some of the greatest challenges that the world faces from solving the food crisis globally to finding a cure for sickle cell anaemia.  We think the more people from different backgrounds that participate  in the world of science the more likely we are to solve some of the worlds greatest challenges.
